The Chronic Consumer

I buy things — all the time!

Party planning

It’s a little early yet, but I’m on my company’s party planning committee this year, which means I have to help put together the holiday get-together. We’re already talking about it because we need to book the venue, dj, and catering well in advance to make sure w get our first choices.

In the past we’ve used hotel ballrooms with some success. The good thing about hotels is they’re spacious and have ample parking, and the people who overindulge in alcohol can easily get a room to sleep it off. The bad thing — well, those easily available rooms have led to some drama, if you know what I mean!

Anyway, I’m going to push for the hotel again (since it’s not too far from my house) as I try to come to terms with the fact that another year is almost over….

Kindle Voyage

kindle voyage Amazon has announced the impending release of a new Kindle e-reader. This one is called Voyage, and is the lightest and slimmest Kindle yet. After reading a bit about the specs and features, I want to say the Voyage is a slightly upgraded version of the Paperwhite. It comes with a 300ppi display (vs. 212 for the Paperwhite) and weighs just 6.3oz compared to Paperwhite’s 7.3 (among other differences).

Among the major changes is something called PagePress page turns. Essentially, both the left and right bezels of the Kindle are pressure-sensitive, allowing the user to simply squeeze the device a bit to turn the page. Tapping the touch screen to turn pages is still an option.

The Voyage costs $199, which is a hundred bucks more than the Paperwhite. Although these changes are a move forward, I don’t think they’re quite worth that much!

Time to reorder business cards

Even though I’m not exactly a “businessperson” in the strictest sense of the word, I like to carry business cards with me at all times. If nothing else, they make exchanging contact information with others a lot easier, so even though I’m not networking or trying to land gigs, it does pay to have them.

I’m down to my last few now, which means it’s time to think about reordering. Last time I went with some fancy letterpress cards, but will just stick to standard ones now. I’ve been looking for cheap business card printing and have several leads already. I just have to settle on a new design and I should be good to go.
