The Chronic Consumer

I buy things — all the time!

Sports ID Bracelet

sports id bracelet I was given a sports ID bracelet for Christmas. It is similar to the one pictured here, and is meant to serve as ID/emergency contact information in the event of an accident while running, biking, hiking, or any other outdoor sport where you’re not likely to have your wallet with you.

The bracelet fits well and is very unobtrusive. I’ve only had a chance to wear it on a few runs so far, but can say that the ID hasn’t bothered me at all. In fact, I don’t even notice that it’s there — which is just as it should be.

I think these IDs are a great idea! I can now run with the peace of mind that comes with knowing my family will be contacted should anything catastrophic happen to me. I hope no medic ever sees my bracelet, but it’s there if need be.

Saxophone for Beginners

Now that my son has been taking guitar and keyboard/piano lessons for a while, one of his cousins wants in on the musical action. But this boy, who’s 12 years old, wants to play the saxophone instead of guitar. So of course my sister and her husband have been searching high and low for a good beginners sax.

I don’t know if they’re actually going to end up buying one, but I’ll send them the link above just in case.

And now we need to start recruiting a few more of the cousins so we can get a real band going!

Apple TV

appletv Several months ago I wrote that I wanted some kind of streamcaster for my TV. At that time I was debating between Chromecast and Roku, but in the end wound up getting Apple TV. After all, 99.9% of my digital media is iTunes-based, so that was the most logical choice.

Anyway, after using Apple TV for a few months, I can say that it’s doing just about what I expected it to do. I like being able to watch movies, videos, and photo slideshows on my big screen TV rather than just my iPad, and haven’t had any problems with the device so far.

There are, however, two negatives that prevent me from completely loving Apple TV. First, the remote control sucks when you have to enter a user name and/or password. It’s very basic, and only has arrow keys rather than an alphabet keypad, so entering long search queries or whatever takes forever. (Fortunately, there’s an app for that — but there shouldn’t have to be!)

Second, I hate that if I rent a movie on Apple TV, I’m only allowed to watch it on Apple TV. Sometimes I’ll start a movie on the TV, and then will want to finish it on my iPhone during my car pool commute to work. But no can do. What’s the point of everything being “in the cloud” if I can’t watch rentals across all my devices — especially since there’s a 24-hr time limit???

Overall, though, I’m happy I finally bought the thing.

Nike Free 3.0 V5 Shoes

nike free 3.0 v5 I’ve been having trouble finding a good pair of running shoes to replace my Adidas Gazelles. I tried a pair of Merrell, as well as some version of the New Balance Minimus, but neither felt all that great to me. I’m going to keep using them (as I can’t afford to throw perfectly wearable shoes away), but just sparingly. In the meantime, I’ve purchased a pair of Nike Free 3.0 V5, which is actually the shoe I wanted from the beginning (but had trouble finding).

Anyway, I’ve worn my new Nikes (the first pair I’ve owned in several years, BTW) for just three short runs so far. As such, I don’t have a definitive verdict on them yet — but I can say that I absolutely LOVE them so far! They seem to offer the perfect blend of minimalist feel and cushioning, which I think is what I need for my injuries.

I’ll give these shoes another couple weeks of road testing before writing a more thorough review.

Camcorder Battery Charger

battery charger I’m probably one of the few people left on the planet that uses a dedicated camcorder or digital camera for my photography needs instead of a cell phone, but I don’t care. I don’t have an expensive phone, so the camera on it is pretty much worthless. I don’t want to miss fantastic, once-in-a-lifetime vacation shots because of a bad camera.

Anyway, I lost my camcorder battery charger somewhere along the line here. A few years ago I probably would have just junked the whole thing and bought a new one, but I’m more budget-minded now and will just buy this replacement sony camera battery charger instead.

Ah, yes…fiscal responsibility is a wonderful thing!

Cyber Monday Deals — Happening Now

Were you able to take advantage of any Cyber Monday deals today? I was pretty busy for the most part, so I didn’t have a chance to look around much. I checked the usual suspects, like eBay, Amazon, Overstock, etc. but nothing really caught my eye. I haven’t bought anything yet; however, there are still several shopping hours left in the day, so who knows what will happen between now and midnight!
