The Chronic Consumer

I buy things — all the time!

Purchasing a summer home

I’ve often dreamed of having a summer home to retreat to when the weather gets hot and unbearable. I’d like it to be by a lake somewhere so we could go boating, fishing, jet skiing, and swimming anytime we wanted. It wouldn’t have to be a high-end house with a bunch of amenities or anything. Just a small place with some nice cabin furniture, running water, and electricity would suit me just fine.

Will we ever have the funds to make this dream become a reality? It’s doubtful, but I’m not ready to give up just yet!

$100 Cheesesteak Sandwich

Who would pay $100 for a Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich? David Beckham, I guess. According to this post, the soccer superstar recently had the famous sandwich at Barclay Prime when the Galaxy visited Philadelphia for a match.

Obviously Beckham can afford something like this, but I just have to wonder… how is it possible to justify charging $100 for a cheesesteak sandwich? Does the restaurant use Kobe beef or something???

Incidentally, I visited to restaurant’s website, but didn’t notice the sandwich on the menu. Does that mean it’s just something everyone knows about?

$8.1 million iPad

I posted just last week about a ballpark selling designer hot dogs for $80. Well, that price is an absolute steal compared to what this upscale iPad costs! It’s from Stuart Hughes (who apparently always upgrades gadgets to ridiculously expensive prices) and comes with the usual gold and diamonds that you would expect. But it also features Ammolite rock (which I guess is pretty rare — so rare that I’ve never heard of it!) and splinters from a 65 million-year-old T-Rex’s thigh bone.

Okay, yeah, that’s fairly unique… but still — $8.1 million dollars??? Riiiiight.

Borders Bookstores Closing

I read a few days ago that all 380+ Borders Bookstores will be closing soon because the chain wasn’t able to find a buyer to pull it out of bankruptcy and/or restructure its debt. I haven’t shopped at Borders in probably a decade, but I do have fond memories of the place. Back when I was in junior high and high school, Borders was the biggest bookstore around and had the widest selection of stuff by far. I used to beg my mom for a ride there so I could browse for hours and hours.

Oh, well, I guess I can add Borders to the list of childhood bookstores that are no longer around (Kroch’s & Brentano’s, Crown).

Dream watch

I was looking at Omega watches tonight because I’m kind of tired of the one I’ve been wearing for 15 years. I think I’ve fallen in love with this gold and diamond Ladies Seamaster. What a beautiful timepiece!! Of course, Omega doesn’t publish prices on their website, but this particular piece is probably close to $20,000 (if not more). There’s no way I’d ever be able to afford something like that, but a girl can dream, right?

$80 hot dog??

Okay, I know ballpark food is far more expensive than it should be, but an $80 hot dog takes the cake! I just read on the Post Game that the Brockton Rox, some kind of minor league baseball team out of Massachusetts, will serve up these $80 delicacies next week to mark National Hot Dog Day on July 23.

So what goes into (or on, rather) an $80 hot dog? Truffle oil, porcini dust, truffle shavings, crème fraiche, caviar, and roe. Ugh. Sounds disgusting to me, and certainly not worth the price tag.

But I bet someone with deep pockets will roll out to that stadium on the 23rd to buy one just because he can!

Any good iPad apps?

I honestly don’t know how people can sift through the tens of thousands of iPad apps in the App Store to come up with anything new to download. I find it tedious to browse through the different categories, and don’t particularly care for the Apple staff recommendations or the Best Sellers list. Genius hasn’t exactly been a hit for me, either.

So what are your favorite iPad apps? Send your recommendations my way!

Skinny male models

Let’s take a dip in the shallow end of the pool today, shall we? Have you noticed how many skinny male models are dominating the fashion magazines these days? What’s up with that? As a woman, I certainly don’t find that attractive or alluring. I am far more interested in male models that look like they know their way around sites like buytestoripped.com. Check out the Abercrombie models in the picture to the right there. That’s exactly what I mean!

I don’t make my clothing decisions based on the models the brand uses, but nothing gets me to turn the pages in a magazine faster than seeing ultra-skinny male models. Yuck!
