I've heard good things about raw diets as well, but I'm a little apprehensive about trying that right now. Maybe I'll go with organic food first, and then switch to raw if the skin problems persist.

Do it! You;ll be glad.

My maltese was getting the horrific skin problems that tend to be typical for older Maltese dogs. It was awful, itchy thikc flakes that removed all the hair in places and bled. I felt terrible.

We tried shampoos, creams, antibiotics, etc. Finally, a guy I met who has a degree in animal nutrition said it is all about diet. We buy food for our dogs will all sorts of byproducts. He said to think about how sick we would get if we ate at McDonald's every single day.

So, I buy Eagle Pack in thier fatthy fish variety. The first three ingredients are anchovies, salmon, and another fatty fish. It took a few months, but he skin and her overall health improved.

You might want to try raw, or eliminating grains from his diet entirely. Grains are a common allergen in dogs. Have you had an allergy blood test done? My border collie, Chase, has environmental allergies. We did the shots, and he is also on allergy pills for dogs. So his isn't food related. I've tried eliminating grains and it doesn't help him, but the pills and shots do. It's hard to find what causes allergies in dogs. I've read that a raw diet can help them a lot. I feed raw, and it didn't 'transform' my dogs like some claim. I still feel good about feeding them raw, though. :)
